Information for scientists and researchers

Research data improves treatment results

FICAN West brings research close to the patient. Our aim is to make it easy for any patient to participate in an ongoing cancer trial, if he/she wants to. Research pervades each step along the treatment path.

As a researcher in FICAN West you will contribute to clinical patient treatment. Together we make it possible for patients to receive the best treatment that follows best scientific knowledge.

Research

Cancer treatment runs in parallel with advanced scientific research. FICAN West is the second largest cancer research center in Finland. Its mission is to coordinate cancer research and teaching in the entire West-coast area of Finland. The goal is to apply research information as effectively as possible to clinical work in all three hospital districts of FICAN West.

The role of FICAN West within cancer research is of national significance. The goal is to integrate cancer research with clinical patient work within the region and within the whole of Finland.

Ongoing research projects

Patients may opt for participating in ongoing clinical cancer trials. Such participation provides valuable input for improvement of cancer treatment and for the development of new anticancer drugs. Trial participation is always voluntary.

Here is information of how the patient applies for entry into a clinical trial.

Collaboration

FICAN WEST is actively engaged in scientific research covering a wide area of oncology: treatment, diagnosis and drug development. A high scientific level is maintained by close collaboration with the University of Turku and companies involved in cancer diagnostics and drug treatment.

When clinical cancer research requires a hospital environment, the facilities provided by the Clinical Trials Unit located in the Tyks T-Hospital offers superior facilities for precisely that purpose.

The oncological research coordinated by FICAN West covers a wide area of oncology and is cross-scientific. Research and innovation of oncological treatment are performed by:

  • Auria Clinical Informatics
  • Health Campus Turku – Terveyskampus Turku – Hälsocampus Åbo (video in english)
  • Turku University of Applied Sciences
  • Turku Science Park Oy
  • Auria Biobank
