Who are we?

FICAN West – Western Cancer Center

FICAN West or the Western Cancer Center coordinates oncological treatment, research and training in Western Finland. We are a part of the national Finnish Cancer Center (FICAN).

We are an organization that overrides the operational, economic and service divisions in the field of oncology in the hospital districts of SouthWest Finland (at TYKS), Satakunta (at Satasairaala) (in Finnish) and Vaasa (at Vaasan keskussairaala) and of the University of Turku.  We are an integral part of the multiprofessional working community of the hospital districts and the university.

Tyks Cancer Centre was awarded the European OECI Cancer Center status in 10/2019, which confirms the status of Tyks Cancer Centre as a major cancer care centre. Tyks Cancer Centre, Annual Report 2023 (pdf)

We are here for you – cancer patient, scientist and employee at FICAN West.

How does FICAN West operate?

We are responsible for the development of cancer prevention, diagnostics, treatment, rehabilitation, advanced research and education within the special responsibility area of the Turku University Hospital (Tyks).

Our task is to harmonize and unify treatment practices and times for access to treatment and to guarantee uniform and consistent cancer treatment to all cancer patients in the catchment area. This carries a commitment to follow the quality of diagnostics and treatment and to steer the development of these functions in a uniform direction within the Turku University Hospital, the Satasairaala in Pori and the Vaasa Central Hospital.

We collaborate with the European cancer network OECI (Organization of European Cancer Institutes) and the European reference network on Rare Adult Cancers (ERN EURACAN).

We carry out and promote advanced, high-quality cancer research. We bring cancer research close to clinical patient work and we aim at exploiting research data to the benefit of our patients.  Our goal is to develop individualized cancer treatments.

Where are we located?

FICAN West is located wherever cancer is studied and treated. It is not a physical building – it is a functional entity that operates in three hospital districts (SouthWest Finland, Satakunta and Vaasa) and within the University of Turku.

Our values

We want to promote high-quality cancer treatment on an equal basis to all patients in collaboration with our partners.  Our work is characterized by vast knowhow and innovation.

Individualized cancer treatment is available for all patients rapidly throughout the area of FICAN West.  We support cancer patients in their daily life by providing guidance and advice so that patients get the help they need.

Personnel

We promote achieving better cancer care in the region of Western Finland.
