Novel treatments for cancer patients in clinical trials

You have the option to participate as a cancer patient in a cancer trial. FICAN West conducts several cancer trials which aim at developing better and more specific and individualized cancer treatments.

We bring science and research to the patient and this makes it easy for you to participate, if you choose to do so.  Participation in a trial provides valuable input for improving cancer treatment and for developing new anticancer drugs.

If you are interested in participating, talk with your doctor or drop a line by email to syopatutkimukset@varha.fi. Your treating physician may also suggest participation in a trial.

Here are the ongoing clinical trials at FICAN West

Clinical trial information leaflet

Before deciding on whether to participate in a trial or not, the trial physician will tell you about the trial and provide you with the clinical trial information leaflet. Please read the leaflet carefully – then you will have a good understanding of what kind of trial you are possibly participating in. The trial physician will be glad to answer any questions you may have.

Participation in a trial is always voluntary

Participation in a trial is entirely voluntary and you will need to provide your written consent to participation. You may, at any point in time, discontinue your participation in the trial and you do not have to give any reasons for this decision.

Suitability

Before the actual trial starts for your part, some lab tests and imaging studies are needed to assess your suitability as a trial participant.

If you participate, you will be compelled to adhere to the requirements of the trial. All of this will be explained, and information about the trial protocol will be provided to you by the trial physician and trial nurse.

Control of clinical trials by authorities; insurance

All clinical trials running in FICAN West have received a favorable opinion by an ethics committee and has been approved by the Finnish Medicines Agency (FIMEA).

The trial participants are covered by a patient insurance and a pharmaceutical injury insurance.

European Patient’s Academy (EUPATI)

The European patients’ academy on therapeutic innovation (EUPATI) provides information about clinical trials, drug development and assessment of methods used in health care.  It organizes training in these matters especially for patients and patient organizations.
