RESEARCH GROUP FOR PEDIATRIC AND ADOLESCENT HEMATOLOGY AND ONCOLOGY

Our main research area is the “Health and Quality of Life in Patients with Early Age Onset Cancer”. Our currently ongoing projects (MiLLI-C, Fysakt, PACS, Syöpäsydän) aim to recognition and alleviation of adverse effects of cancer therapies. Milli-C evaluates immune reconstitution and metabolic adverse effects (like obesity) in relation to changes in the gut microbiota. Syöpäsydän is a nation-wide registry-based study on cardiovascular morbidity and mortality following cancer treatment, and Fysakt is an international study on physical activity after childhood cancer. PACS is a Nordic study on short and long-term consequences of pregnancy-associated cancer in women and their offspring, with collaborators from Denmark, Sweden and Norway. Furthermore, a local project called Digital tools in detecting late-effects in adult childhood cancer survivors has started in 2018 at our late-effect clinic. A new approach will be a project on genetics of cancer predisposition and drugs used in cancer treatments.

Docent Lähteenmäki is also the PI for a Nordic study on epidemiology, biology, treatment, and survival of children with cancer and severe hematological diseases (NOPHO-CARE) funded by the Swedish Childhood Cancer Foundation.
